Founded in 1088, the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum) is widely recognized as the oldest university in the  Western world. About the Medicine and Surgery Degree Programme

The Single Cycle Degree Programme in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna is a six-year course taught entirely in English. Established in 2017, the program is designed to provide a scientific and professional education that enables graduates to practice medicine both in Italy and abroad. It emphasizes the integration of basic sciences with clinical practice from the early years and promotes a multidisciplinary approach to health.

The course attracts a highly diverse group of students, fostering a multicultural classroom environment. This international setting helps students develop the communication skills and global perspective necessary for a modern medical career.

 


 

About the Veterinary Medicine Degree Programme

The Single Cycle Degree Programme in Veterinary Medicine is a five-year course taught entirely in English. Established in 2025, it is the first veterinary medicine degree taught in English in Italy. Dedicated to the “One Health” approach, the program integrates basic sciences with clinical practice, preparing students to tackle international challenges in animal health, food safety, and public health.

The course is based at the Ozzano dell’Emilia campus, which offers cutting-edge facilities including a teaching hospital, laboratories, and stables for hands-on training. With a restricted number of places available annually, the program ensures a focused and high-quality learning environment aimed at training competent, globally-minded veterinarians.

Tuition Fees

At Italian public universities, tuition fees are calculated based on the official ISEE (family income) certificate.
This system applies to both EU and Non-EU students, meaning that fees are income-based. 

Depending on family income:

  • Fees can be very low or even fully waived,
  • Or can reach approximately €500–€5,000 per year for higher-income families.

 

Scholarships – DSU (Diritto allo Studio Universitario)

The DSU regional scholarship is a public financial aid program that provides eligible students with financial grants, accommodation, and subsidized meals. It is available at all Italian public universities and is awarded by the regional authority where the university is located.
